Equal Tax Benefits For Same-Sex Couples

Updated:

Same sex couples that are legally married, now have equal tax benefits. The government is issuing the regulations needed to allow gay couples married in states that recognize same-sex marriages to file joint federal tax returns, following a recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew says the new rules will provide "clear, coherent tax filing guidance for all legally married same-sex couples nationwide."

Lew said the regulations also make clear that legally married same-sex couples will be able to move freely throughout the country and their federal tax filing status will not change.

According to the organization known as Iowa One, couples may file amended returns, covering their legal marriage for up to three years. The organization says the ruling does not apply to domestic or other partnerships, nor does it include civil unions. In Iowa, same-sex couples can get legally married. Illinois only allows civil unions.
