Missing Snowmobiler Body Found After Nearly 3-Years

It was just another day for 22-year old Shawn Berthel as he was riding his snow mobile with a group of friends on the Maquoketa River. Things got serious when he crashed into the ice and went under. His friend riding with him fortunately made it out alive, but Shawn was never found.

"I don't know how many times we were on the ice looking. When the ice went out we were on boats at least once if not least twice a week looking. The first summer we spent all summer looking. Never found a trace," said his father, Roger Berthel.

Until now, almost 3-years later his body was finally found Monday in the Mississippi River. 10-miles of where he originally went in. His mother Cherie Hammerand was in complete shock when she got the call, but the memories of that tragic day were overwhelming.

"The whole accident and just came back from the past," she said through tears.

Search crews looked day in and day out for his body, but were unable to find him. Last summer his family nearly gave up, but they always felt he would eventually turn up.

"I always thought something would be found, some day, I just never knew when and how long would it be," his mother said.

And although his parents are feeling the loss of their son everyday, they say they now have some closure after all these years.
