UnityPoint Announces Quad City Flu Shot Clinics For Fall 2013

Updated:

MOLINE, ILLINOIS, September 17, 2013 - The beginnings of fall are in the air…kids are back in school, football season has kicked off, and the leaves are changing colors. Autumn also unfortunately signals the start of influenza season. Getting your flu shot now can make a big difference, and UnityPoint at Home will begin offering community flu shot clinics throughout the Quad Cities beginning Thursday, September 19.

"UnityPoint at Home continues its tradition of providing flu shot clinics throughout the Quad Cities. During the fall, we offer several convenient locations where the public can receive the vaccine from one of our registered nurses," states Penny Knox RN, BSN, UnityPoint at Home clinics coordinator. "Additionally, getting your flu shot now can help prevent and limit spreading the flu."

Reasons for receiving the influenza vaccine in early fall include:
·         It takes approximately two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu,
·         The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone get a flu vaccination as soon as they are available in the community,
·         Flu season can begin as early as October.

The seasonal flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses that research indicates will be the most common during the upcoming season. The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and scientists' estimations about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in a given year.

The CDC estimates that approximately 36,000 Americans die from influenza-related complications each year. Groups at a higher risk for complications from the flu include the elderly and people with health conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. Those in the high risk group are encouraged to get vaccinated early. Children ages 9 to17 with a parent or guardian may receive the vaccination. No physician's order is required.

Flu vaccinations are $35 per person or at no charge with Medicare Part B. UnityPoint at Home will accept all Medicare coverage including Medicare Advantage Plans. Please bring proof of Medicare coverage at the time of vaccination.
