Bob The Blacksmith

Updated:

It's a time honored skill. One that dates back centuries.

Bob Tuftee of LeClaire is an accomplished blacksmith. He teaches classes and also does demonstrations at the blacksmith shop at Pioneer Village near Scott County Park.

The shop is a  throwback to the way it would have looked about a hundred years ago.

Bob started out thirty years ago making ironware for camping trips.

He says in order to be a successful blacksmith, your skills with a hammer have to be good. Precision is important. A good blacksmith does not just pound on metal, he has to be able to move it.

In  the pioneer days, the blacksmith would repair farm equipment, reshape plowshares, and his business was very important to the community.

Tuftee makes fancy looking handles, iron flowers, and other items. He says it is a very satisfying skill.
