The beat goes on at Garfield Elementary School in Davenport. Eleven students are involved in a drum circle.

The students play the  African drums and percussion instruments. This group of fifth graders is also learning that they have to listen, follow directions, and be respectful.

Music teacher Linda Dowd says it's really all about being part of a community. She believes it's an opportunity for the students to become leaders. They can carry that message back to their individual classrooms  and make a difference.

School Counselor Candy Reed thinks the excitement is spreading throughout the school.  Other students are also expressing an interest in joining the drum circle.

The hope is that the drum circle will get more kids excited about learning, increase their achievement scores, and reduce the number of behavior referrals.

All fifth grade students at Garfield will participate in a drumming curriculum this school year.
