Eighteen people die every day waiting for an organ transplant, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. But one QCA family is working to change that.

The Brockway family in Burlington, Ia. Held a 5K walk/run Saturday to raise money for the Garrett M. Brockway foundation. The family started the foundation after their son died earlier this year in an accident – just 18 days after his tenth birthday. After their son Garrett's death, the Brockways donated his organs. And since then, they say their son's organs have saved five lives and helped several others.

The family has made it its mission to spread awareness about organ donation through the foundation. And the Tiffini and Bruce Brockway said the thousands of dollars raised at the 5k today will go toward increasing awareness, as well as scholarships and youth athletic activities in the area.

More than 1,400 people participated in the 5k, and the Brockways said 43 people signed up at the race to become organ donors.

You can sign up to become an organ donor on the Department of Health and Human Services website, OrganDonor.Gov.

And you can learn more about Garrett's story and foundation on his website and Facebook page.
