UnityPoint Health has announced there has been a breach in security for its electronic medical records.

In a news release sent Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, UnityPoint says the personal information of approximately 1,800 hospital patients may be at risk.

The announcement comes after a routine audit of the electronic medical record system in August detected "a pattern of unusual access to patient data". UnityPoint found that a person employed by a third-party, gained access by using someone else's password. UnityPoint shut off access and reported the matter to police. The unauthorized access occurred from February, 2013 through August, 2013.

UnityPoint has sent letters to patients that are affected, and is offering a credit monitoring service. In the meantime, those who use the electronic medical records system are being trained on policies meant to safeguard their password.

A special toll-free line has been set up to provide for more information or to answer questions. Call (877) 223-3817. Callers will need to use reference number 6688100113. The call center is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Individuals may also email UnityPoint Health at questions@unitypoint.org or may contact UnityPoint Health at: 1776 West Lakes Parkway Suite 400, West Des Moines, IA 50266 Attn: Privacy Officer.
