Maquoketa: One Intersection, Two Accidents

One intersection, north of Maquoketa, Iowa, was the location of two similar accidents, hours apart on Monday, October 7, 2013.

The first accident happened Monday morning, when an SUV carrying two people was struck by a semi at the intersection of Highway 61 and Hurtsville Road.

The driver of the SUV was injured and needed to be flown by helicopter to the hospital.

Later that evening, around 7:10, a second accident happened at the same intersection.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says an SUV driven by 22-year-old Taylor Muller of Maquoketa was eastbound, crossing the northbound lane of Highway 61 when she stopped at the entrance of Hurtsville Road.

Officials say Muller believed the road was closed due to the ongoing cleanup of the accident from earlier that day.

At this point, she began to back up her vehicle onto the northbound lanes of 61 and into the path of a semi driven by 47-year-old Carl Johnson of Eldridge, Iowa.

Muller's vehicle was broadsided and sent into the median.

The semi went into the east ditch and struck a large drainage culvert causing the trailer to break open spilling its load.

Officials say the semi was carrying hazardous material, requiring the assistance of the Davenport Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Muller, a 15-year-old passenger and Johnson were all taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The sheriff's office says the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
