Friendliest Town Award Expected to Boost Tourism

City and business leaders in Kewanee said Sunday they expect a boost in tourism after their city was named the friendliest small town in the nation in the 2013 Rand McNally Best of the Road Contest.

Residents said the award comes as a morale booster as well after the town received word in September the BOMAG factory had plans to close. Following the announcement the mayor said that could mean a loss of at least 100 jobs.

But the mayor and store owners in town said the award should bring in more tourists, and possibly someone who would be willing to bring in a new business and create jobs.

Kewanee, Il. came out on top in the race this past week with four other towns from across the country for the award.

Other cities in the running with Kewanee were Macon, Georgia; Bradenton, Florida; Murray, Kentucky; and Keokuck, Iowa.

Voting was conducted on the contest website at, from July 1 through September 3, 2013.

Other categories included Most Beautiful City in America, Most Fun, Most Patriotic, Best for Food and Best for Geocaching.
