Although the water tower in Silvis stands one hundred and fifty feet tall overlooking the city, it's obvious there's something  that makes it different than the rest.

"It's up for the water tower of the year in the United States,"said Silvis Mayor Tom Conrad.

The Mayor also said since the tower was painted to look like a golf ball months ago, it's taken on it's own identity.

"Most of the time you paint a water tower and nobody gives it a second thought," said Conrad.

Since Silvis hosts the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament, it seemed like the perfect fit. It's even causing the new look to get a lot of attention.

"We try to give ourselves an image and this water tower is giving us that. Taking on a life of its own," said Conrad.

The "Tank Of The Year" award allows people from all over the country to vote for the most attractive water tower on a list of nominees.
The winning tank will hold the title for a year, but for Silvis Mayor, it's about more than just an award.

"I think it gives us an identity. I think it gives us a source of pride.  We have something else that no one else has,"said Conrad.

People in Silvis agreed with the Mayor's statement.

"It'd be good recognition. Good for business. It will draw people to the scenery," said Belinda Edgarmont.

"I think its great to win anything. It's a neat idea," said Edward Mote.

"If the water tower wins the award I think it'll be pretty cool," said Kyle Thorngren.

The mayor says no matter if the town wins or lose the competition, it's the pride from the community that counts.

Earlier

The City of Silvis, Ill. needed its water tower repainted this year.

Instead of getting a basic paint job, officials decided to spend a little extra money and have it painted to look like a golf ball sitting on a tee.

The hope was to get a little recognition during the annual John Deere Classic golf tournament, held at the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis.

Well, not only did they get that recognition, they are now in the running for "Tank of the Year" on the TNEMEC.com website.

Silvis is in the running with dozens of other cities across the country.

At the time this story was written, Silvis was in the lead with over 20% of the vote.

The company says the top 12 water towers will be considered finalists and will appear in a 2014 calendar.

They say they will pick the official winner from the finalists and announce it in early November.
