Deere Layoffs At Iowa Factory

Updated:

Production workers are being laid off at the John Deere Des Moines Works factory in Ankeny, Iowa.

About 100 employees were notified Friday that they'd be placed on indefinite layoff early next month. That's on top of the 40 workers who were laid off in mid-Septermber. John Deere is one of Ankeny's largest employers with about 1,300 workers.

Deere released a statement saying it has to adjust the size of its workforce to market conditions in order to stay competitive.

The farm and construction equipment manufacturer has its headquarters in Moline, Ill. A company spokesman tells KWQC-TV6 that the Des Moines layoffs are specific to that factory and that they have made no other recent announcements.
