Giant Pumpkin Auction Benefits Kewanee Area United Way

Updated:

Did you ever want to make a jack-o-lantern out of a giant champion pumpkin?

You could if you're the highest bidder at the great gourd gathering!

The public is invited to bid at the Stamped Auction of Champion Pumpkins on Friday, October 25, 2013 from 12 :00 noon through 1:00 p.m. at the Black Hawk East Campus.

The Champion pumpkins for this year's auction have been donated by Nature's Garden of Galva, Stahl's Produce of Lafayette, Country Corner Market of Alpha as well as other BHC friends.

Last year's auction raised more than $4,500 for the Kewanee Area United Way.

The great gourd gathering is a major United Way fundraiser and is held in the cafeteria at Black Hawk East Campus in Galva, IL. (Located off of route 78).

This will be the 11th year for the event which got started when a BHC ag student brought a semi-load of monster pumpkins from his family farm in Indiana.

BHC alum Bill LeSage will once again serve as auctioneer.

Members of the BHC Livestock Judging Team will demonstrate their mastery of pumpkin pedigrees and other students will serve as bid spotters.

Due to the high cost of the individual pumpkins, syndicates are formed where people pool their funds, much like it is done with breeding cattle, swine and horses.

This year there will be 10 enormous pumpkins, lots of laughs and a great time for with proceeds benefiting the Kewanee Area United Way which supports 19 agencies throughout Henry and Stark County.
