Businesses are already thinking ahead to the holiday season and holiday shopping. Major department stores are announcing for the first time this year they will be opening on Thanksgiving night at 8 p.m.

But not everyone is excited about the idea.

"It's a time for families to get together, and for people who haven't seen each other for while to come together. It shouldn't be about deals and buying stuff on that day. It should be just about family, families getting together," said Jayvon Matthews, of Davenport, IA.

Younkers, JC Pennys and Sears announced they will open their doors to shoppers earlier than usual this year. The retailers saw great success opening at midnight last year instead of the usual 3-4 a.m.

North and South Park Mall's Marketing Manager, Aleshia Chiesa, says they saw an increase number of people taking advantage of the extra time and so they hope to do even better this year.

"The national retail federation is predicting a 3.9% increase from last year. The couple of hours that we're opening is going to help with those increases," she said.

And shoppers like Maria Vera and her family will help those increases. She says she loves the idea of stores opening early and thinks other retailers should do the same.

"It's a great idea. First of all, my kids love to go shopping at night for black Friday. So, they always go and start early as soon as they finish eating, because we have our Thanksgiving dinner later. As soon as they get done they're off and shopping so I love it because then they can find some really good deals," said Vera.

Many of the other retailers will open during regular hours on Thanksgiving night. That is at 12 a.m. for their Midnight Madness black Friday sale.
