Update 11-6-13:

The Des Moines County Sheriff's Office says 12-year-old Kyler Schnedler was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities were called to Mediapolis Tuesday for a victim of a gunshot wound. The sheriff's office says investigators determined the gunshot was self-inflicted and no foul play is suspected. The Mediapolis Community School District is providing counselors for Schnedler's classmates. 

Earlier post 11-5-13:

The Des Moines County Sheriff's Office says a 12-year-old has been taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Around 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, Deputies along with Mediapolis Ambulance responded to the 7600 block of 260th Street in rural northern Des Moines County.

They say the minor was transported to the hospital and then taken to University of Iowa Hospital in critical condition.

An investigation is underway to figure out how the incident happened.

The name of the minor is being withheld by authorities.
