Christmas Tree Safety Tips

This is how most Christmas trees looks when you're all done decorating--lights and bulbs galore.  And maybe even a few gifts under the mistletoe for family or friends.
Davenport fire officials want you to know that it can quickly turn into this.

"We're actually trying to get people aware that having a live tree isn't an unsafe thing, but lets do the right things so that we don't have a problem," said Lt. Mark Kakert with the Davenport Fire Department.

Fire officials say all it takes is seconds for a house fire to spread from a Christmas tree.  That's why they're offering safety tips for you tree shoppers out there wanting to take precautions.
"When you get it home, make sure you make that one inch fresh cut before you bring it in the house," said Kakert. "Making sure you keep it watered. If you let the tree dry out for even 6 hours, then it stops taking water."

"We've all seen those terrible, nightmarish news releases where the tree would go up in flames in no time if you don't water it," said George Bingham with Teske Pet & Garden Center.  "Once they get to a point where its brittle, it can just go like that."

That's why it's important to pick a tree that's going to be worth your while this season.

"Make sure that its fresh," said Kakert. "Are there needles falling off? Are the needles breaking when you touch the tree? Are they brown? That kind of thing."

The lieutenant tells us the fire department already sees an increase in house fires this season due to furnace and heater problems.  But, it's a rarity fire crews are called out for Christmas tree fires. He says he'd like to keep it that way.

"We don't see a lot of Christmas tree fires here in the quad cities. I can't remember the last one, but lets not see any Christmas tree fires. Lets make it safe from the start, " said Kakert.
