Illinois Quad Cities Unemployment Numbers Lowest In State

The Illinois Quad Cities are seeing the lowest unemployment numbers in the state right now.  In Rock Island county,  it's 7.9 percent, down from last years 8.2 percent.  In Scott County, the rate is 5.4 percent.  Mercer county is at 6.5 percent.  Both small improvements from last year.  We spoke with officials at the Chamber of Commerce today who say those numbers are a reflection of business coming,  developing and staying here in the Quad Cities.

"We regularly go out and ask our businesses to compare their workforce here with places they might operate elsewhere and we get high marks for productivity," said Tara Barney with the Chamber of Commerce. "We've got constant hiring going on. We have big companies here that are creating and looking for full time talent, day in, and day out.

Barney also tells us the Quad Cities unemployment numbers in the past two years haven't changed much.  She says it's a good thing...and credits our area manufacturing companies  that are always looking to expand and hire employees.

Not every county in our area saw positive employment numbers.  Henry county is at 7.3 percent unemployment - a .6 increase from last year.  Whiteside county stands at 8.8 percent unemployment -  up .2 percent.
Compared to national numbers, the Bureau of Labor says unemployment is at a five-year nationwide low,  at 7 percent.
