Demolition Begins At Rock Island's Audubon School

Updated:

Demolition has officially started at the Audubon School in Rock Island, Ill.

Crews began the process around 7:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2013.

The crane started the work in the back portion of the building.

It's an emotional day for neighbors watching the longtime school, where students pictures still hang, be reduced to rubble.

Back in October, board members voted to tear down the building that has been vacant for three years.

School officials say during that time, only Fareway Food Stores put an official offer down.

Another developer showed interest in the building last summer, but nothing was ever signed.

Neighbors say they aren't sure they're ready to let the building go, telling us they wish it could become something else.

The structure was built in 1922, and after 91 years, demolition to get rid of this old building has begun.
