The office of U.S. Senator Mark Kirk, (R-Ill.) announced that the suburban Chicago lawmaker is in the hospital.

Kirk was admitted Saturday morning with stomach pains. A news release says doctors determined that Kirk had gall stones and his gall bladder needed to be removed.

Sen. Kirk underwent surgery Monday morning to have his gall bladder removed. He is now said to be resting comfortably and is expected to make a quick recovery.

Kirk suffered a severe stroke in January, 2012. After intensive therapy he was able to return to work about a year later.
