Annual "Bikes For Brains" Event

Updated:

Winter weather has set in, but it's never a bad time to win a bike.

Several Quad City kids are the proud new owners of bicycles, thanks to the annual 'Bikes for Brains' giveaway.

With help from community partners and donations, organizers were able to meet a $7,000 goal and present kids with their first bike and helmet. This is the 12th year for the event, inspired by a book on child development saying kids need two things to succeed:  a set of blocks and a bike.

"With the blocks, they learn their numbers and the alphabet, with a bike they learn balance, exercise, and trust," said Sandy Seeley-Copley, co-chair of Bikes for Brains. "Many families can afford the blocks, but they cannot afford a bicycle."

Also on hand for the event was a puppet show to teach kids about bike safety and get them going in the right direction.
