Davenport Approves Changes To Modern Woodmen Park

Davenport council approves new attractions and more seating at Modern Woodmen Park, voting 8 to 2 in favor of modifying the city's rental agreement with the River Bandits.

Owner Dave Heller told TV-6 over the phone Modern Woodmen is a great park, but it lacks seating areas for smaller groups.

He says there has been a lot of demand for seating areas to handle groups of 50 people, and there aren't enough spots in the park right now.

He says installing three additional deck areas will help meet that demand.

He's also going to install a longer zip line, a merry go round, and an amusement ride called a drop and twist.

The goal is to keep family entertainment right in line with the baseball at Modern Woodmen.

It's a strategy downtown aldermen Bill Boom says is smart business.

"I am watching this to make sure we don't create a carnival, but minor league baseball is a little bit different than major league baseball and if you go to any other games in any other city, you'll find their trending towards family entertainment," says Boom.

The city already approved Heller installing a Ferris wheel at the ballpark.

Crews began working on the foundations for it earlier this year.

Heller says all the attractions would be run during baseball season and would close during the off season.

He will finance the improvements with one million dollars of his own money.

Wednesday's agreement increases his rental fee for using the park.

The city uses that money to pay for capital improvements at the ball park.
