Tampico Students Donate Blankets To Washington Students

Updated:

The 5th grade student council from Tampico, Ill. plans to donate blankets to elementary students at Central Primary in Washington on Wednesday morning, Dec. 18.

The Tampico Elementary students raised nearly $1,400 and bought materials to make the blankets themselves.

"We all sat together and we thought of ideas to do and we eventually thought of making blankets for all of them," said 5th grader, Rubey Gallentini.

"We wanted to make sure that they're warm this winter," said classmate, Elexis Vickrey.

At roughly 200 blankets, there are more donations than there are Tampico Elementary students. Every one of them made with care, often during after-school hours.

"I told them from the beginning that the student council isn't just for fun all the time but it was to make a difference in the school and the community," said teacher, Ann Cooper.

After the students donate their blankets, they plan to tour the destruction. It's something the kids are already preparing for emotionally.

"I'm excited to go because I want to see all the happy faces when I give them to them," said Vickrey, "but I don't want to be sad at what I see."
