Updated:

"He was a very caring, passionate, ambitious young man,"said Nicholas Valberg.

Some people in the rock island community are paying their respects to Derek Jackson by leaving flowers, candles and teddy bears at the doorstep of Inkfathers, the place where the victim worked.
Friends tell KWQC, that Jackson was a well known tattoo artist in the Quad Cities that was known for his drawing ability.

"Derek was very popular in the Quad City area," said Valberg.  "Everybody in the Quad City area has known Derek very well for memorializing people through his portrait work."

Jackson used to work at O' tool design in Rock Island and that's where he met Valberg.  Valberg says the Quad Cities lost a jewel yesterday when he was killed.

"He's going to be sorely missed in this entire Quad City community. I think everybody is just really is a state of shock that he's been taken from us," said Valberg.

As the news of Jackson's death spreads through the community, friends post their condolences to his Facebook account--adding pictures of the tattoos he's done, in his memory.

Valberg says he lost a very good friend yesterday and  he will remember Jackson by getting a tattoo in honor of him.

"I'm sure I will get a memorial piece in memory of Derek," said Valberg.
