Last-Minute Christmas Shopping Rush

Updated:

A lot of area stores held special open hours for Christmas Eve, giving last-minute shoppers a chance to finish their Christmas gift lists.

Thousands of people in the QCA headed to the stores to take advantage of that opportunity.

Their reasons are all different, but for the hundreds of shoppers at the JCPenney in Davenport on Tuesday, last minute shopping had to be done.

"Just coming out to get some gift cards," one shopper, September Riedesel, told us.

"I woke up this morning and was like, "Oh boy, I gotta shop for my wife,'" said another shopper, Stephanie Van Hollebeke.

Still, other shoppers were just waiting until they could buy the right gifts for their loved ones:

"I got to college and my parents don't really want all Iowa State stuff so, I was decided to come to the mall where it's nice to go to stores where they actually shop at," Brianna Sierra said.

But, while some shoppers say they meant to leave things until the last minute, others said they were nervous they wouldn't be able to find exactly what they came for.

"Everything is gone. Everything I wanted to get for anybody is gone," Anna Sierra said. "I'm running around with my sister and getting frustrated."

Suzanne Vos, JCPenney Store Leader, told us this big sales rush is normal for this time of year.

"Right up to New Years, a lot of people come in. Especially with people who do Christmas a little later, maybe on the weekends. We'll still see returns and exchanges, but the big gift is gift cards. So a lot of people redeem those right away so we'll be really busy until around mid-January," she said.

For those really last minute shoppers out there, there will be some places open on Christmas Day.

CVS and Walgreens stores will be open around the QCA.

And, if you are looking for a place to eat, Denny's, IHOP, Starbucks and McDonalds will be open as well.
