A weekend fire forced multiple people from their home and killed a family dog in Port Byron, Ill.

The fire broke out at a home on Ravine Street, Sunday, December 29, 2013.

Officials say the homeowner wasn't there at the time of the fire.

According to reports, the house was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, but they weren't able to attack the flames right away.

They say one of the problems was that the home sits on a hill which was too icy for the heavy fire equipment to get to quickly.

Snowplows were called in to help firecrews access the scene.

Crews reportedly spent hours on scene battling the blaze.
