Galesburg Changes Cannabis Ordinance

Updated:

The Galesburg city council has voted to essentially decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Currently, possession of up to two-and-a-half grams is considered a misdemeanor under Illinois state law.

Now it can simply be a violation in Galesburg carrying a $300 fine. Officials say the change could generate an extra 20 to 30 thousand dollars in revenue each year.

The amendment does not change the laws, you still cannot possess marijuana or drug paraphernalia but the new ordinance will allow the city of Galesburg to benefit from fines and court costs instead of that money going to the state.
