Freezing temperatures have caused numerous sprinkler pipe bursts in the Sterling Rock Falls area.

Four pipes have burst in the last week, including one that's closed St. Mary's Catholic School for the rest of this week.

A two inch sprinkler pipe burst in the attic of the school.

Pouring water down through two computer labs on the second and third floors.

The principal says the attic is unheated and the damage has been done.

She's canceled classes the rest of the week while cleanup and repair workers do their jobs.

The school has insurance and the adjustor was out Wednesday.

The principal hopes to have kids back in class on Monday, but when she drove to school Tuesday, she knew classes this week were doomed.

"I'm seeing all this water come out of the side door and all these firemen and fire trucks and thought this was bigger than what I thought," says Principal Rebecca Schmitt.

Fire Chief Gary Cook says, "It's quite unusual we're getting this many this quick, but you know, we don't know either."

The fire department is unsure why there are so many of these pipes breaking across the area.

The chief's best guess is construction modifications that changed what kind of air was reaching these pipes.

St. Mary's principal asked the city building inspector to stop by Thursday.

She's hopeful the city will allow her to hold class on the first floor and in unused classroom space in the school basement.

It's unclear how long repairs to the upper floors will take.

The Sterling Rock Falls area has had four pipes burst in the last week.

An apartment building, the school; just today, city hall and a fabric store also suffered broken sprinkler pipes.
