UPDATE: In a press conference on Friday morning, officials say the gas leak is located in a line that is underground and outside the building.

They say even though the leak is located outside of the building, the gas is still finding its way into the basement of the building.

Because it's underground, they still don't know why it's leaking or how big it is.

They still hope to have people back in their apartments by later this afternoon.

Officials say the evacuations took quite some time because many of the residents are elderly or have mobility issues.

Some had to be evacuated using stretchers and ambulances.

ORIGINAL: An apartment building in Clinton, Iowa had to be evacuated Friday morning, after fire crews accidentally discovered a natural gas leak.

Officials say crews had responded to the Lafayette Apartments, located at 143 Sixth Avenue South, to investigate the report of a water leak.

When they arrived, they found dangerous levels of natural gas in the basement of the five story building.

Fire officials say 38 people were evacuated from the building, beginning around 2:21 a.m.

A press conference is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. to update the situation.
