UPDATE: In a press conference on Friday morning, officials say the gas leak is located in a line that is underground and outside the building.

They say even though the leak is located outside of the building, the gas is still finding its way into the basement of the building.

Because it's underground, they still don't know why it's leaking or how big it is.

They still hope to have people back in their apartments by later this afternoon.

Officials say the evacuations took quite some time because many of the residents are elderly or have mobility issues.

Some had to be evacuated using stretchers and ambulances.
