A newly formed community foundation has issued grants worth nearly $63,000 to benefit the Village of Milan, Ill.

The Grant W. Brissman and Virginia M. Brissman Foundation, established in 2013, made its first grants to benefit the Village of Milan Monday, Jan. 13, 2014. The seven grants will help organizations provide Milan residents with basic needs like food, emergency assistance, and school supplies, therapy for children with developmental disabilities and fun for the whole community through the renovation of the Milan Sprayground.

As long-term residents of Milan, Illinois, the Brissmans wanted to make sure their legacy continued to benefit their community. Their estate created a $2.8 million foundation with a mission to improve the quality of life in Milan by funding work to enhance youth development, foster community development, support cultural activities, and invest in ways to relieve the suffering of underprivileged people.

The recipients of Brissman Foundation grants for fall 2013 include:

• Children's Therapy Center of the Quad Cities - Therapy Services for Children with Developmental Disabilities - $9,000

• Church of Peace - Milan Manor Meal Site - $4,000

• Just Kids Early Care & Education Centers - Disadvantaged Family Assistance - $10,000

• Milan Christian Food Pantry - Open Food Pantry for Milan residents - $17,917

• Milan Parks Department - Sprayground Renovation - $10,000

• Rock Island/Milan First Day Fund - School Supplies for Students of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School - $2,000

• Spring Forward Learning Center - Out-of-School Time Program - $10,000

The Brissman Foundation accepts grant applications twice each year. Applications for the spring round of grants will be accepted beginning February 15, 2014 from nonprofit organizations located in Milan. Grant applications are available on the Foundation's website at www.brissmanfoundation.org and are due by April 15. Nonprofit organizations located within the Village of Milan, Illinois, are eligible to apply. Organizations located outside of Milan may be considered if they provide significant services benefiting the Village of Milan and its residents.
