Update 1-30-14:  Charges have been filed against the person found trapped inside a car that crashed into a field earlier this month. 54-year-old Randy Knotts of Galesburg has been charged with two felony counts of obstructing justice. Authorities say the charges stem from Knotts telling them that the driver of the car was "Shane" at the time of the crash. Detective Sergeant Jason Landers says police believe Knotts provided false information to protect the identity of Shannon Porter.

Update 1-15-14:  The Knox Co. Sheriff's Department has identified the man whose body was found in a field Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014. Now, after conducting interviews, officials say Shannon R. Porter was apparently involved in a weekend car crash.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, emergency crews were called to the same area for a rollover accident.  They found a vehicle on its top and partially submerged in the water. There was one person trapped inside. The man, identified as Randy Knotts of Galesburg, told officials that he was not the driver, but first responders did not find anyone else at the scene or any tracks.

Knotts was extricated from the vehicle and taken to a Peoria hospital for treatment. When Knotts was released from the hospital and interviewed again, he insisted he was not driving at the time of the accident. He told investigators that Porter was the driver and that after the accident, Porter was outside the vehicle asking if Knotts was okay. Knotts said Porter got into the water, entered the vehicle and tried to free Knotts, who was pinned under the dashboard. Porter was unsuccessful and told Knotts he had to go. He left the vehicle and was not found until days after the crash. Officers say there was a house near the accident scene.

After an autopsy Wednesday, it was determined that Porter did not have any injuries that could have caused his death. He died from exposure. Officials are still waiting for toxicology test results.

Earlier post:

A man's body was found in a field in Knox County and now authorities are trying to figure out what happened to him.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, the sheriff's office was notified of a body found at 1850 Knox Rd. 500E. The body was found around 11:45 a.m. about 600 feet from the roadway.

The male Caucasian has not been identified, but is believed to have been 35-40 years old. Officials say there were no signs of foul play on the body. An autopsy was conducted Wednesday, but results are not available yet.
