Last Great Race On Earth

Posted: Updated:

Man and dog. Working in tandem. Trying to travel more than one thousand miles through blizzards, across frozen rivers, and over hills and mountain passes.

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is an annual tradition in Alaska. It is billed as the Last Great Race On Earth.

The social studies students in Erin Montgomery's class at Camanche Middle School have a special interest in the race. They are writing letters of encouragement to sled dog racer Cindy Abbott. Abbott is from California, and the students will track her progress along the trail.

Abbott will open each letter at various checkpoints.

Erin Montgomery is a finalist for the 2015 Iditarod Teacher On The Trail. The students are also cheering for their teacher. She is one of three finalists. If Erin is selected as 2015 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail,  she will go to next year's event,  not to race, but to teach. Erin would use the Iditarod  as a teaching tool. She would follow the race from a plane, going from checkpoint to checkpoint.

Montgomery would blog and skype to  students around the world, sharing her experiences with them. Giving them a unique  look at this very interesting race.

Erin attends a teacher conference in Anchorage next month. She will make a presentation and go through a series of Interviews. Sometime in April, Montgomery will find out if she is chosen as 2015 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail.
