MidAmerican Energy is warning its customers about a scam.

They say some of their customers have reported receiving fake emails, saying they owe large amounts of money on their utility bill when they really don't.

The emails are actually coming from hackers, using logos of legitimate utility companies to trick customers into sending them money.

One customer, Eileen Thompson received an email saying she owed $500.

It urged her to click on a link and give her credit card information, something experts say is a major red flag.

Sheriff's officers in Henry County, Iowa report a similar scam.

They say this kind of scam email was reported there just days ago.

This one came from a non-reply web address claiming to be from PG & E Energy.

Officers remind everyone to double check transactions over the internet, and always make sure everything is legitimate before making any transaction final.
