UPDATE: Rock Island Police Investigate Body Found Near River

UPDATE 1-22-14: An autopsy has been performed and the Rock Island County Coroner says  preliminary results show Mr. Califf died of hypothermia. There were no signs of any foul play. The Investigation into the circumstances of his death continue and more tests, such as toxicology, are still pending.

UPDATE 1-21-14: Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson has confirmed the identity of body found on Monday evening as that of missing Rock Island resident, 43-year-old Steven J. Califf.

Guftason says an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, 2014.

ORIGINAL: The Rock Island Police Department is investigating a death along the shore of the Mississippi River.

Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson confirmed the body found is a male. Gustafson said he has a strong idea of the man's identity but would not elaborate.

According to a release from the department, police responded to an area south of Sunset Marina along the shore of the River in reference to a deceased subject.

The search started at 3:09 p.m. and the department is involved in the investigation along with the Rock Island County Coroner's Office.
