Once again, the student newspaper staff at Davenport West High School gets recognition for excellence.

The Beak "N" Eye received the George H. Gallup Award. That is the highest honor given by Quill and Scroll Honor Society. That is the society which honors high school journalism.

The school paper was recognized for coverage of school and national news, writing, use of visuals and photo layout, and for following free speech guidelines.

The newspaper has received the Gallup Award every year since 1973.

Steve Lyle is the newspaper advisor. He makes story suggestions but it is the student staff members who ultimately decide what stories will appear in the paper.

The paper was first published in 1960. Today, it has a magazine format and all the pictures are in color.

Writer Corralle Whalen is learning how important time management is, especially when it involves story deadlines. She does research and interviews.

Editor Jephthah  Yarian  says each student gets a copy. The paper is a monthly. Yarian says teachers also read it, and sometimes use it in their classroom as a teaching tool.
