An Illinois State Trooper was sent to the hospital after his squad car was rear-ended on I-74 Tuesday morning, January 21, 2014.

Officials say the trooper was parked on the right shoulder of westbound I-74 at mile marker 30 working on a crash in the right ditch.

The report states the squad car lights were activated and a flare line was deployed to warn approaching traffic.

At this point, officials say a pickup approached the scene, lost control and struck the rear of the squad car pushing the squad into the right ditch and made contact with the car from the original crash (that was abandoned at the time of the incident).

Both drivers were transported from the scene with injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver pickup was identified as 49-year-old Ricky A. Sharp of Galesburg, Ill.

Sharp was cited for driving too fast for conditions and failure to yield to stationary authorized emergency vehicle, AKA the move-over law.

The crash remains under investigation.
