DeWitt, IA Woman Frees Herself From Snow Drift In Blizzard

Posted: Updated:

One DeWitt woman talks about how she got through last night's blizzard in whiteout conditions, black ice and snow drifts.

"I remember my husband and my dad telling me that in order to get out of a situation like that you need to back up a little bit and rock forward and try to go forward a little bit more," said Jeni Martin. "And I could see a clear path of road that I could get to."

Martin was on her way back home from work and even though police warned people to stay off the roads, she had no choice but to come home when she got stuck in the blizzard.

"It was a pretty thick drift, it was pretty compact too," said Martin. "I was driving about 15 MPH and I just came to a sudden stop and I made sure I was on the road."

She says she got stranded right behind someone else, one of the 21 cars she saw stuck in ditches and on the shoulder on her way back from Clinton to DeWitt.

It took her 10 straight minutes to wiggle herself out of the drift and she said keeping calm kept her safe.

"Not spinning the tires, because that can cause more problems and get stuck further," said Martin. "And just backing up a little bit and trying to get that forward momentum to get out of that safely."

Her advice to other drivers: keep an emergency car kit with warm clothes and don't be an over-confident driver.

"Just being prepared and knowing it can happen to anybody," said Martin.
