A group of women reached a lofty goal of raising $2.5 million for young children in the Quad Cities.

Surrounded by pre-school children, members of the Women's Leadership Council announced the accomplishment at the Family Y in downtown Davenport Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014.

The WLC raised the funds needed to build an early childhood learning center at the site of the old W.G. Block property on 4th St. and River Drive. WLC Co-chair Molly Carroll says it will be much more than a pre-school program.

"We hope it will be an outreach, not just for early learning, but for parents in all of Davenport and the Quad Cities to come for parent education; we'll have hygiene distribution; we'll have community gardens and lots of programs that will revolve around early childhood education," said Carroll.

By building the facility, she said it will lead to a better workforce and a stronger community.

She says 100 women each donated $2,500 toward the project and local businesses also contributed. The center will stand next to the future site of a new Y. It will serve up to 130 children. Groundbreaking is expected this spring.
