IL Tollway Worker Killed, Trooper Injured In I-88 Crash

Posted: Updated:

An Illinois tollway worker is dead and a state trooper is in the hospital after a crash on Interstate 88 Monday night.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. near Aurora, Ill. when a tractor-trailer hit the pair as they were helping a disabled semi. The worker, Vincent Petrella, was killed at the scene. The state trooper, 38-year-old Douglas J. Balder, is in the hospital in serious condition. The accident also forced the temporary closure of all eastbound I-88 lanes and some westbound lanes in that area.

According to Illinois State Police, Trooper Balder was on duty in his ISP squad car when his vehicle and Petrella's tollway maintenance vehicle were struck. Both were responding to assist a disabled truck tractor semi-trailer.

The Illinois State Police urge drivers to respect Scott's Law, and to use caution when approaching emergency vehicles on the interstates and roads.

Meanwhile, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has ordered that state flags be flown at half staff to honor Petrella's sacrifice.
