Washington, IL Mayor Attends State Of The Union Address

Posted: Updated:

His town was devastated, but last night he got a first hand look at the state of the union.

The mayor of the tornado ravaged town of Washington, Ill. was in the audience on Tuesday night for President Obama's State of the Union Address in Washington D.C.

Mayor Gary Manier says he was impressed by the experience, but is disappointed the president didn't talk about last year's devastating tornado damage in Washington.

"Obviously it's always something to be a part of history and obviously I've never done this before so I really appreciate Senator Kirk bringing me as his guest. To witness and you know walk the halls that all the folks have walked before you know, it was just very surreal.  But the speech I'm obviously somewhat disappointed that he didn't bring up the devastation that happened in Illinois, his home state."

People and businesses in Washington, Illinois did get federal aid to rebuild after November's tornados, but FEMA denied an aid request for local governments.
