UPDATE: Multiple Vehicle Accident On Iowa Bound I-74 Bridge

UPDATE: Dozens of vehicles were involved in multiple accidents that closed down the Iowa bound I-74 bridge for nearly an hour and a half on Monday morning.

The first call came into the Scott Emergency Communication Center around 10:05 a.m.

Bettendorf officials say the initial accident occurred when a driver illegally changed lanes to exit the bridge, which caused other vehicles to slam on their breaks and swerve, which they say caused a chain reaction.

According to Bettendorf officials, there were three separate accidents, 31 vehicles were involved, and 12 people were transported to the hospital.  

The initial accident took place near the State Street off ramp and continued to just north of the center span.  

The accidents closed the Iowa bound lanes of the bridge until around 11:27 a.m.

Illinois bound lanes remained opened.  

The accident remains under investigation.

UPDATE: (11:45am) One lane of traffic is moving slowly on the Iowa bound I-74 bridge.

The incident happened just before 10:15 a.m. on Monday morning.

According to an eye witness, there were at least 20 vehicles involved in the wreck.

Multiple emergency vehicles have responded to the scene.

Avoid the area if possible.
