The Need For Speed

Posted: Updated:

Austin Huyten says he likes going fast. Huyten is a chiropractor, and also a speed skater from Orion, Illinois.

He especially enjoys short track competition. Huyten has trained with Olympic Gold Medalist Shani Davis.

His top speed on skates was forty two miles an hour, years ago. In 2002, Austin went to the Olympic Trials in Salt Lake City and missed making the team by about a second and a half.

As a kid, Austin roller skated around the basement of his home. He loved it. However, he later was introduced to speed skating, and excelled in that as well.

Huyten has racked up his share of medals, trophies, and other awards.

Recently, I timed the 32 year old as he did three laps at the River's Edge in Davenport in slightly less than 32 seconds.

Huyten says the power in a skater's legs gives forward momentum and forward drive. He says Shani Davis is tall and long muscled. Austin thinks that gives Shani an advantage as he goes for gold at Sochi.
