Organizers Consider Moving QC Criterium To Village Of East Davenport

Posted: Updated:

The Quad Cities Bicycle Club is nearing its 50th year for their annual Memorial Day tradition, the Quad Cities Criterium, but they say it might not be held in Rock Island, Ill.

The club is considering moving the race across the river to the Village of East Davenport.

The Quad Cities Criterium, for years held in Moline, was moved to the District of Rock Island in 1997.

According to the bike club, it's the 2nd longest continuously running bicycle race in the United States and will be celebrating the 50th edition in 2015.

Race director Tom Schuler says the organizers are looking to offer a more challenging course to the competitors.

"Cyclists are always looking for hilly, challenging courses that test their strength and endurance and this new course will be a very tough and exciting course as we approach the 50th anniversary of the event ."

The proposed start/finish would be located in the heart of the Village business district on 11th Street.

The course then travels into the hills of McClellan Heights before plunging back down 12th Street and back to the start finish for a total course distance of three quarters of a mile.

There is no word on when a decision will be made for the move.
