The Quad Cities community came together Friday night to honor a longtime Davenport Police officer who passed away unexpectedly this week.

The candlelight vigil and walk was all about celebrating Sgt. Kevin Marxen's life and legacy.

It was an evening of prayers, hugs, and tears.

"It's sad, it's sad. You know, somebody taken way too young," said one person who attended the event, Toni Krana.

But in the midst of the mourning, there was also an overwhelming message of love and gratitude for a life dedicated to serving our community.

"He's up there watching us, smiling down, and he'll feel the love that was felt for him," said Brian Heick, a Davenport Police Officer who took part in the event.

Sgt. Kevin Marxen, a 36-year veteran of the Davenport Police Department, died of an apparent heart attack while jogging on the Centennial Bridge walkway on Tuesday.

On Friday night, hundreds turned out for a candlelight honor walk across that bridge and back.

Sgt. Marxen was well known for taking his routine "bridge runs", during which he would jog from the police station, across the Government bridge into Rock Island and then back across the Centennial Bridge into Davenport.

He was better known for his leadership and attitude.

"Always very positive, upbeat, willing to help with anything," Krana said to describe Sgt. Marxen's personality.

"He had a lot to do with training and helping the new officers," added Heick.

After nearly four decades as a Davenport Police officer, it's clear Sgt. Marxen touched a lot of lives.

"The Department lost a great teacher, a coach and a mentor," said Heick.

"Awesome guy, you know, great person, helped the community out a lot," Krana said.

His legacy is remembered by his family, friends, colleagues and fellow community members who were walking in his honor Friday night.

Sgt. Marxen's funeral will be held Monday morning at St. Anthony's Catholic church in Davenport.

Visitation hours will be held Sunday from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries funeral home.
