Axle Breaks Loose In Whiteside Co. Semi Crash

Posted: Updated:

One person was taken to the hospital after an accident involving a wayward axle from a semi-tractor trailer in Whiteside County.

On Feb. 20, 2014 around 5:44 a.m., deputies responded to a report of an accident at the intersection of U.S. Rt. 30 and Acker Road. Officers say the semi, driven by 56-year-old Timothy Sharp of Deer Grove, lost control on the icy road and the trailer hit the guardrail. The rig then left the roadway, dumping steel beams across the road before the rear axle of the tractor broke off and blocked both lanes.

That's when a car driven by 22-year-old Katelyn Petersen of Charlotte, Iowa approached the scene and was unable to stop before striking the axle in the middle of the roadway. She was not hurt. Sharp was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries
