Hilltop Campus Village Developments

Posted: Updated:

Davenport's Hilltop Campus Village has recently gained several new businesses, including the Eastside Bakery, Hilltop Groceries and Spirits, and the Harrison Lofts, an $8 million project.

Program director Scott Tunnicliff has asked various people about improvements they would like to see added to the area.

"Whether it's the colleges, or the churches, or the neighborhoods, or the city, or the business community, they all want to see something happen," he said.

Tunnicliff says the historical area has gone downhill over the past 40 years. Residents have noticed.

"I do know that this used to be a very, very bad part of town," Harrison Lofts resident Randall Jenkins said.

However, neighbors say the recent additions are improving the area.

"It's making it a lot more positive, this area here," Jenkins said.

"Well, since I've been here, everything is doing okay," Hilltop resident James Jones said.

Tunnicliff says the neighborhood could see a new business open within 30 days. Another might open in 60 days, and up to two more could open within the next three to six months. He can't reveal the names, but says, with more businesses, the village is now working on forming a co-op, a place for sharing ideas.

"And keeping the Hilltop sort of top of mind when opportunities come along," Tunnicliff said.
