Dog Bites Teen In Bettendorf; Owners Found

Posted: Updated:

Update:   The dog and its owner have been found. Bettendorf Police say they have confirmed and identified the dog who bit a 13 year old boy.  Police say thanks to all the media coverage and tips from the public they were able to find the owners.  The identification came just in time to save the boy from undergoing a rabies shot treatments that were scheduled for Friday afternoon. Police say charges could be filed next week.

The City of Bettendorf is asking for the owner of a dog to come forward so a 13-year-old boy won't have to undergo rabies treatment.

Officials say the boy was bitten on the arm while on the playground of Mark Twain Elementary School on Lincoln Rd. Tuesday, March 11. Officers were called to the area just after 6 p.m.

The teen told police that he was bitten by a black and brown German shepherd. The boy said a man came over and grabbed the dog off of him. The man then told him to stay there and he would return after securing the dog and another dog the man had of similar breed and color.  But instead, the apparent owner left the scene with the dogs and never returned. He may have had an adult female with him.

The boy was taken to the hospital by ambulance and treated and released for the dog bite.

Police ask that the dog owner contact them so they can verify that the dog is up to date on its rabies vaccination. if not, the 13-year-old boy will have to go through rabies shot treatment.
