TV-6 Investigates: EM Teacher Fired; Board Documents Allege Testing Misconduct

Posted: Updated:

Less than a week after an emergency East Moline School Board meeting left a teacher without a job, TV-6 Investigates has obtained documents revealing the school district discovered several problems stemming from this year's state testing.

East Moline schools fired fifth grade teacher Jennifer Longanecker last Thursday during an emergency session of the school board.

She taught at Glenview Middle School.

Illinois teacher license records show she has been a licensed teacher since 2000.

Longanecker has worked for districts in two parts of the state.

The charges from the Board of Education list five reasons for dismissal.

(Read the documents here.)

Longanecker is accused of opening a reading section of an ISAT test booklet several days before the test was scheduled.

The board documents say that was with the intention of teaching students the material appearing on the test.

An open reading test booklet was found in Longanecker's classroom on March 4th, before the reading test sessions had begun.

The board document says the student assigned the booklet denied breaking the seals.

Longanecker is also accused of helping students during MAP testing that would guide them to the correct answer.

She's also accused of telling a block teacher to guide students to the correct answers.

As a result, the district says MAP test scores for Longanecker's remedial reading classes show 83 percent of the students passed.

The district says that's disproportionately higher than the results for other students in non-remedial reading classes.

TV-6 stopped at Longanecker's home Tuesday evening. Her husband says she's not willing to comment on her dismissal right now.

Longanecker can ask for a state hearing surrounding her firing.

She has two weeks to make that decision.

The East Moline School Board President had nothing else to add Tuesday, saying she could not discuss personnel issues.

The school district is on spring break this week.
