Clinton Wastewater Dumped Into Mississippi

Posted: Updated:

A break in a line resulted in the release of some 50,000 gallons of raw, domestic wastewater into the Mississippi River in Clinton on Tuesday, March 18, 2014.  In a news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, crews from the City of Clinton were able fix the break hours later.

Crews also came up with a way to pump and haul away the about 4,500 gallons of waste to minimize the amount discharged. The DNR says the operators of public water supplies in Davenport, Fort Madison, Burlington and Keokuk were also notified of the sewage spill.

By 9:30 p.m., the repairs were finished. The DNR says the wastewater is expected to be diluted in the Mississippi River and "does not pose a known public health threat."
