World Downs Syndrome Day

Posted: Updated:

March 21 is World Downs Syndrome Day.  Downs syndrome is a genetic disorder in which the person has 3 copies of chromosome 21 instead of two copies.  The Centers for Disease Control has estimated the frequency of Downs Syndrome in the US is 1 in 691 live births.  Aside from celebrating those living with this genetic disorder, 3-21 Day also raises awareness to the need for more research.

On Quad Cities Today, First Alert Meteorologist Greg Dutra interviewed a board member with the Quad Cities location of Gigi's Playhouse.  The organization works with families with children with Downs Syndrome.
