Iowa Coach Says Son's Tumor Was Malignant

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says the tumor that doctors removed from his son's thyroid earlier this week was malignant.

McCaffery's 14-year-old son Patrick had surgery in Iowa City on Wednesday, just hours before the Hawkeyes lost to Tennessee in the First Four of the NCAA tournament.

"Today, we received word from doctors that the tumor thatwas removed during our son Patrick's surgery on Wednesday is malignant," saidMcCaffery in a brief statement. "We will visit with doctors as soon as possibleto determine Patrick's treatment.

"Margaret and I would like to thank everyone again forthe outpouring of support from across the country for our son Patrick andfamily this past week. We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers."

McCaffery says he and his family will meet with doctors soon to determine further treatment for Patrick. McCaffery isn't planning any additional comment on his son's condition at this time.
