With spring officially here and warmer weather to come, so comes the risk of flooding. We've already seen flood warnings and watches in our area with river levels constantly changing.

The local chapter of the Red Cross is working to spread the word about flood preparedness, part of national Flood Safety Awareness week.

The organization from the Midwest River Region is also getting ready to kick off a new project for kids. It's called the "Pillowcase Project."

Red Cross volunteers will help area elementary school students decorate a pillow case and teach them how to pack it with important things in case they need to leave their home in a flood or another kind of emergency.

"It's good because they learn how to be prepared and then they'll feel confident when something does happen," Brooke Mehaffey of the American Red Cross said. "So their stress level isn't as high when an emergency occurs."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting minor to moderate flood risk across much of the country.
